POPOFF: Do you recall how these three songs were received by the English press?

HENDERSON: They were happy. All Englishmen are happy with fellow Englishmen, because they want to get a beer bought for them at the pub. I’m kidding. But none of the Iron Maiden albums have truly been dissed by the British media. I just remember it being a really dark setting, and they were serving drinks.

POPOFF: Another outlier is “Weekend Warrior.” Is this another example of Maiden trying to place themselves more in the mainstream of metal, specifically American metal? After all, that’s pretty close to a Ted Nugent album title!

HENDERSON: “Weekend Warrior” is a Steve song, but it sounds more like a Bruce song, like Tattooed Millionaire. Good, fun tune. But this is really where Maiden started changing from being less serious than they probably should have been.

“Weekend Warrior” is one of my favorite kind of poppy tunes. I’m not saying there are throwaway songs, but there are too many songs on this record. That’s the problem. It’s nearly an hour. They probably should’ve trimmed two or three, just to make it a little more palatable. Maybe it’s that long because there were so many songwriters. Because if you drop a song—“Hey, that’s my only song!” [laughs]

KELLY: “Weekend Warrior” is kind of AC/DC-ish. I like the straight-ahead ones. I think Maiden does that so well; I love it when they’re covering that ground. I also like “From Here to Eternity” because I like the salacious Bruce lyric. I think it’s just kinda funny. And I like that hook—it’s got the “Woman from Tokyo” vibe to it. I’m a sucker for that sweet-and-sour thing they do.
